Best of Lisbon May 2011

Black Wing Stilt: Seen from Parque do Tejo next to the Parque das Nacoes. This place is hard to find on public transport as it is set at the end of a long strip next to the sea passing a built up new area full of shops, bars and reasturants. Here the birds to note was Black Wing Stilt, Marsh Harrier, Siberian Warbler, Kentish Plover, Zitting Cisticola and Little Egret.

White Stork: This Stunning bird was found when I took a trip with Bird and Nature Tours witch where simply fantastic, taking me via car to private cork farms and land where I saw some stunning birds including Squacco Heron, Purple Heron, Black Kites, Hoopoe, Golden Oriole, Great Spotted Cuckoo and European Cuckoo.

Siberian Wrbler: Seen in a tree along side a tributary of the Tagus Eastuey in the Paque do Tejo. There where a row of trees here on a feild next to the river where Black Wing Stilts and Little Terns where observed,

Black Redstart: Seen from the Castle of Sao Jorge. Seen feeding out of the bin around the stone walls overlooking the city.

Black Shouldered Kite: Theses where by far the most notable bird of prey which I saw on the trip with the Birds and Nature Tours. Seen all over in family groups and individually. A stunning bird.

Greater Flamingos: Caught a glpymse of Greater Flamingos as i passed over the Tagus River Bridge on the far end travelling away from Lisbon. This picture was taken on a private cork farm.

Great Spotted Cuckoo: This is a snap shot taken from my seat in teh car out of the window again in this private cork farm. This simpley shows how rich in birdlife theses farms are. Also on this farm was European Cuckoo calling.

Yellow Legged Gul: Seen from the shore of the Praça do Comércio. Here there was hundreds of swifts and swallows and gulls.

Unknown Lizard: Off the wall following the shore towards the Parque do Tejo. Looking beond the wall where tens of Kentish Plover, Little Heron and over the sea where gulls hanging around the Tajo Bridge. Just past the skate park there where Green Finch, Swallows, Black Birds, Starling and Linets.

Monk Parakeet: There was a huge roost at Lisbon Zoo. Outside the enterance. Also saw Ring Neeked Parakeets in the City centre. Came to the zoo to see if I could see the Night Herons which roost here after trying to ask a member of staff who only spoke portuguese I still was unable to find them although I am sure I saw three flying over. I followed but was unable to find a possitive I.D.
